Our clients often ask if they can heat their homes and businesses with energy from the sun. The answer is a qualified Yes! The problem with solar space heating is this - when our homes most need heat in the winter the sun only shines an average of 4-5 hours per day. To gather enough energy in that time you must install alot of collectors. Then what do you do with all that energy in the summer? At Hickory Ridge we have answers for your questions, contact us for a free consultation.
Flat plate, pool and evacuated tube collectors all on the same roof!
Evacuated tube collectors are especially good for solar space heating, even in colder climates and mostly overcast conditions. In this installation controls are used to put heat energy into an 80 gallon domestic hot water tank. Once full to capacity the heat is then sent to a very large storage tank, waiting until the home thermostat calls for heat which allows the gas fired boiler to run less often and sometimes not at all.
In the summertime this energy is used to heat the pool and hot tub. The homeowner enjoys swimming both earlier and later in the season.
Flat plate collectors can also be used for space heating. In this system 8
CORONA™ collectors fill a 500 gallon insulated storage tank with heat energy (in excess of 500,000 btu) hidden in a garden. The automatic controls deliver that heat to an indoor pool, a radiant space heating system and domestic hot water. The collectors are ground mounted on a south facing hillside.
This home is near Pottstown, PA. On the day this photo was taken it was 22º F, but bright and clear. The thermostat was set at 80º F and the gas boiler did not run until several hours after dark.
These systems were installed by our partner contractors. They all help the homeowner heat their home by gathering energy from the sun, reducing the amount of fuel needed.
